Public Calls for Resignation of Indicted Stone Mountain Board Member

Ray Stallings Smith III has been indicted on multiple felony charges related to efforts to overturn the lawful results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Smith, an attorney, was appointed to the Stone Mountain Memorial Association (“SMMA”) board in 2003 and has previously served as its chairperson. The SMMA board is currently overseeing an $11 million taxpayer funded “truth telling” exhibit to be built by Warner Museums.

As reported in The Hill and the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

“He (Smith) played an extensive role, both speaking to lawmakers himself and questioning some of the Trump team’s witnesses. In connection with the hearings, Smith faces three counts of soliciting a public officer to violate their oath and two counts of making false statements. He also faces six counts in regard to the scheme to submit a false slate of electors, including counts of forgery, two false statement charges and multiple conspiracy counts.”

Additionally, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution

“Smith advised the alternate GOP electors who met in a committee room at the state Capitol, cast votes for Trump and signed documents falsely claiming Trump won. Smith has been charged with multiple felonies in Fulton County, including violation of the Georgia RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act; conspiracy to commit impersonating a public officer; two counts of conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree; conspiracy to commit filing false documents; two counts of conspiracy to commit false statements and writings; two counts of false statements and writings; and three counts of solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer.”

Behind Trump and Guillani, Smith is the third most indicted individual in the Fulton county case. A public ethics complaint against Smith was also filed with the State Bar of Georgia earlier this year. Smith also represented Lin Wood who relinquished his law license in Georgia due to “disciplinary proceedings.”

Georgia taxpayers deserve a board member who will work to unlock cultural, recreational and economic potential of the park, and at a minimum, believe in basic historical facts and not the election “Big Lie” or “Lost Cause.”

Sample message:

I am reaching out to call for the resignation of Ray Stallings Smith III from the Stone Mountain Memorial Association board. Georgia taxpayers who provide millions of dollars to keep this park operational, deserve a board member who will work to unlock cultural, recreational and economic potential of the park, and at a minimum, believe in basic historical facts and not the election “Big Lie” or “Lost Cause.” At a time when the park desperately needs strong governance and public respect, Smith should resign or be removed by the board.
